BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) -- Lionel Messi has reversed his decision to retire from the Argentina national team and will play in this summer's Copa America tournament, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) announced today.
Messi, who retired from international football after Argentina's loss in the 2016 Copa America final, had hinted at a possible return in recent months.
"I am very happy to be back," Messi said in a statement released by the AFA. "I missed playing for Argentina and I am excited to have the chance to represent my country again."
Messi's return is a major boost for Argentina, which is hoping to win its first major title since the 1993 Copa America.
The Copa America will be held in Brazil from June 14 to July 7.
