Lawyers for the Boeing employee-turned-whistleblower found dead by apparent suicide have hailed him as a "brave honest man of integrity".
He had given evidence in a lawsuit against the firm in the days before his death.
John Barnett, 62, had been giving a formal legal deposition against the plane manufacturer before his death.
The Charleston County coroner confirmed his death to the BBC on Monday. Officials said the death after two days of testimony was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Boeing said it was "saddened to hear of Mr Barnett's passing".
Lawyers for the whistleblower said he had been "raising concerns over safety issues with some of Boeing's airplanes for years".
