23-year-old defeats Wimbledon champ Zhang to reach last eight

Sun to face in-form Raducanu in fourth round

Kiwi tennis star Lulu Sun has continued her stunning run at Wimbledon, reaching the quarterfinals with a stirring three-set win over defending champion Zhang Shuai.

The 23-year-old, ranked 97th in the world, fought back from a set down to beat the eighth-seeded Chinese player 6-2 5-7 6-2 on Sunday.

Sun will now face her biggest test at Wimbledon thus far when she takes on in-form British star Emma Raducanu in the fourth round on Tuesday.

Raducanu, the 19-year-old US Open champion, has been in impressive form at Wimbledon, dropping just one set on her way to the last eight.

Sun will be hoping to continue her giant-killing run and reach the semifinals for the first time in her career.

The New Zealander has been in fine form this season, winning two WTA Challenger Tour titles and reaching the third round of the Australian Open.

Sun's success at Wimbledon is a major breakthrough for New Zealand tennis. She is the first Kiwi woman to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam since Marina Erakovic in 2013.

Sun's match against Raducanu is scheduled to start at 11am (NZT) on Tuesday.
