Mike Williamson confirmed as Carlisle United's new head coach

Carlisle United have appointed Mike Williamson as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal.

The former Newcastle United defender succeeds Paul Simpson, who was sacked on Sunday following a poor run of results.

Williamson, 39, has been out of work since leaving Gateshead in February 2022.

He previously had a spell as caretaker manager of Gateshead in 2019.

Williamson made over 250 appearances for Newcastle United during two spells at the club.

He also played for Portsmouth, Watford, Wolves and Rotherham United.

Williamson will be assisted by former Carlisle United defender Danny Livesey.

Carlisle United are currently 19th in League Two, just one point above the relegation zone.

Williamson's first game in charge will be at home to Sutton United on Saturday.
